The Dominican Republic declared independence from Haiti on February 27, 1844 — and this coin was struck that same year, making it one of the first issues of the newly formed nation. Haiti had banned metallic currency during its 22-year rule of the island, so the reintroduction of coinage carried immediate practical and political urgency.
