Barghash bin Said came to power in Zanzibar only after a brief and failed coup attempt against his brother Majid in 1859 — he was exiled to Bombay for two years before eventually taking the sultanate in 1870. His reign coincided with intense British pressure to end the Indian Ocean slave trade, culminating in the 1873 treaty that closed Zanzibar's slave market entirely. The 1882 coinage, struck in small quantities, was produced at the Bombay Mint under British oversight — an arrangement that tells you precisely where actual power in the region resided.
