| Obverse description | Facing bust of Pope Gregory III rendered in a crude, stylized manner characteristic of early medieval Roman coinage. The pontiff is depicted with a nimbus or crown-like headdress, with large almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, and a short beard indicated by hatched lines. The draped bust is shown frontally, occupying the majority of the small flan, with floral or foliate ornaments visible in the fields to either side. The overall style reflects the transitional Byzantine artistic influence prevalent in papal Rome during the early 8th century. The die work is rough and typical of hammered silver fractional coinage of the period. |
