The fractional dollar coinage of the British West Indies was a direct response to the chronic shortage of small silver in the Caribbean colonies, where Spanish milled dollars had long dominated trade but created an impossible arithmetic for everyday transactions. The 1/8 dollar denomination was essentially an acknowledgment that local commerce ran on fractions, not on imperial sterling units. These were struck at the Royal Mint in London for colonial distribution, not for use in Britain itself.
The series was short-lived — production ceased by 1822 as authorities concluded the experiment had not meaningfully solved the circulation problem.
