| Reverse description | The reverse depicts a detailed scene of two vessels underway on water: a traditional multi-masted sailing dhow or lateen-rigged vessel occupying the central and left field, accompanied by a steam-powered vessel emitting smoke to the right, symbolising the transition from sail to steam trade on the Niger River. Arabic numerals appear above the sailing vessel in the upper field, and the Hijri year ١٢٧٤ (1274 AH) is inscribed in large Eastern Arabic numerals along the lower exergue. The design is enclosed within a beaded border. |
