The Amper-Taler is a regional complementary currency issued by the Dachauer Regionalwährung initiative, part of a broader German movement — driven largely by ecological and localist economics — to keep spending within defined geographic areas. These schemes proliferated across Germany in the 2000s and early 2010s, drawing loose inspiration from the earlier Chiemgauer model launched in Bavaria in 2003. Participation is voluntary; merchants opt in, and notes are exchanged at par with the euro through designated outlets.
Naming the currency after the Amper river rather than the town is a deliberate choice — Dachau carries associations that the initiative evidently preferred not to put on a banknote.
