La Axarquía is a comarca in Málaga province, and this 1 Axarco note is one of several locally denominated paper instruments issued in Spain during the 1980s by private individuals or associations experimenting with regional complementary currency — a phenomenon that had no legal tender status and existed in a grey zone that Spanish monetary authorities largely ignored at the time. Antonio Gámez Burgos issued this under his own name, making the personal liability explicit in a way that official currency never is.
The Axarco series is genuinely rare in collected form. Most circulated briefly within a narrow local network and were never systematically preserved.
