| Reverse description | A left-facing armored bust of Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the Spanish conquistador and explorer, is portrayed in high relief occupying the majority of the field. He wears an ornately decorated morion-style helmet with intricate scrollwork and a ruff collar, beneath which articulated pauldrons of plate armor are visible. Small sprigs of laurel or oak flank the lower portion of the bust on either side of the field. The legend - VN - BALBOA - curves along the upper periphery in widely spaced Latin capital letters. |
