This coin belongs to the "Bolívar Fuerte" series introduced in January 2008, when Venezuela redenominated its currency by lopping three zeros off the old bolívar — a response to inflation that had been grinding through the economy for years. The irony was immediate: the Fuerte itself began depreciating almost from the moment of issue, and by the early 2010s the purchasing power of a 1 Bolívar coin had become effectively theoretical.
Banco Central de Venezuela contracted Casa de Moneda de Venezuela in Maracay for production, though some years saw additional striking abroad to meet demand.
