The Nawabs of the Carnatic occupied a peculiar constitutional position: nominally Mughal governors, then effectively independent rulers, then increasingly puppets of the English East India Company as the 18th century wore on. Small copper cash of this type circulated throughout that deterioration, issued across a span long enough that attributing individual pieces to specific reigns is rarely possible. The series covers the tenures of at least five nawabs and the entire arc of Anglo-French rivalry in the Deccan.
