Ghana's official gold foil notes are issued under a numismatic program rather than for any monetary purpose — the face value is nominal, the real interest is in the material itself. Ghana is Africa's second-largest gold producer, which gives the premise at least a coherent national logic, even if the notes are essentially collector merchandise dressed in legal tender language.

The foil substrate is produced by specialist security printers experienced in polymer and metallic sheet formats. At 1/1000 troy oz of 999.9 fine gold, the gold content is fractional enough to be commercially accessible while remaining technically verifiable.
