Louisiana State Penitentiary — Angola — operated its own internal scrip system to allow inmates to purchase goods at the commissary without handling U.S. currency, which was prohibited inside the facility. These small-denomination notes functioned as a closed monetary system, redeemable only within the prison's own retail operation and worthless outside the wire.
The 1 Cent denomination is the lowest in the Angola scrip series and saw the hardest use — pocket-worn examples are the norm.
