| Descrizione del dritto | The Arms of the British North Borneo Chartered Company displayed in full heraldic style at the centre of the coin. The shield, depicting a sailing vessel upon water, is supported on the left by a bare-chested indigenous male figure holding a large shield, and on the right by a second indigenous male figure grasping a spear. Above the shield, a crest features a figure atop a vessel bearing a flag. At the base, an ornate ribbon scroll carries the motto legend PERGO ET PERAGO in raised Latin lettering. The entire design is enclosed within a fine beaded border. |

The British North Borneo Chartered Company received its royal charter in November 1881, making this 1882 trial piece among the earliest coinage attempts by one of the last private commercial enterprises ever granted sovereign territorial rights by the Crown. The Company administered the territory — essentially running a government for profit — until the Japanese occupation in 1941.
As a pattern rather than a circulation strike, KM#Pn1 was almost certainly produced to demonstrate viability to Company directors or Colonial Office officials before full coinage was sanctioned.
