Obverse description Seated allegorical figure of the French Republic (Marianne) facing left, wearing a radiate crown, draped in classical robes, holding a fasces upright in her right hand and resting her left hand upon a rudder; a sheaf of wheat appears to the left in the field. The mintmark 'A' and engraver's initials 'A.B' appear in the exergue beneath the figure. The circumscribed legend 'REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE' arcs around the upper periphery within a beaded border, with the date '1885' placed prominently at the lower periphery.
