United Foodtown was a cooperative of independent supermarket operators in New Jersey, and these small-denomination scrip pieces functioned as change-making instruments — issued to avoid relying on coin supply during periods when cents were in short supply or simply inconvenient at checkout. Retailer-issued fractional scrip of this type occupied a legal grey area, tolerated rather than formally sanctioned.
The near-square format is unusual among American trade notes and suggests local printing rather than a specialist currency house.
