Jamaica decimalized its currency on September 8, 1969, replacing the Jamaican pound with the dollar at a rate of two dollars to the pound. The 1 cent was the smallest denomination in the new system. The "Wide Legend" designation distinguishes this early type from a subsequent modification; the spacing was tightened on later dies, making this the short-lived first iteration of the design.
