Lithuania's 1922 currency reform replaced the ostmark and the tsarist ruble with the litas system, and the centas notes were the smallest denominations issued under the new Lietuvos Bankas. The 1 Centas (Pick 7) was printed by W. Hagelberg in Berlin — one of several German printing firms contracted for the inaugural Lithuanian series, a practical choice given proximity and the lingering postwar availability of quality intaglio capacity in Germany.
Notes of this denomination circulated hard and fast; purchasing power was low enough that they passed through many hands quickly. Survivors in any decent condition are proportionally scarcer than the higher denominations from the same issue.
