Obverse description A large five-pointed star with a flat top occupies the central field, rendered in relief with a hollow pentagonal centre. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE runs along the upper periphery in Latin capitals. The date 1851 is positioned at the lower field, flanked on each side by a small five-pointed star serving as a punctuation device; the left star bears no mint mark. The numeral '1' in the date displays a flat top, a diagnostic feature distinguishing this variety.
