Chile's copper centavo series ran through a period of extraordinary national upheaval — including the War of the Pacific (1879–1884), which stripped Peru and Bolivia of territory and left Chile the dominant power on the continent's western coast. Coin production at the Santiago mint continued largely uninterrupted through the conflict, and circulating copper saw heavy use as silver was hoarded. KM#146a distinguishes this issue from the earlier bronze composition of the same type, a quiet material change that the mint made without fanfare mid-series.
