Uruguay's bronze centesimal coinage of 1869 was struck in Birmingham by Ralph Heaton & Sons under contract — the same facility producing small denomination coins for dozens of newly independent states that lacked domestic minting infrastructure. The multiple catalog references (SA#15.1, 15.2 and CG#15.1, 15.2) reflect documented die varieties, primarily distinguishable by differences in the positioning of date numerals and the spacing of lettering.
The centesimal system itself had only been formally adopted in 1862, replacing a chaotic colonial-era monetary structure inherited from Spanish rule.
