A cigogne — stork — is the totemic symbol of Alsace, and naming a complementary currency unit after it is a deliberate act of regional identity, not just branding. The Sud Alsace complementary currency is part of the broader French mouvement des monnaies locales that gained momentum after 2010, with dozens of similar schemes launched across metropolitan France under varying degrees of municipal and cooperative backing.
These notes circulate at par with the euro among a network of participating local businesses. Redemption mechanisms and network size vary considerably by scheme, and the Sud Alsace network is among the smaller regional issuers.
