Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before any coins bearing his effigy entered official circulation in British territories. This East Africa crown is a pattern issue, struck in anticipation of a reign that lasted less than a year. The Royal Mint had advanced preparations for colonial coinage, but abdication rendered the entire production run obsolete before distribution.
