| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field features the national emblem of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in high relief: a cogwheel and a field of rice stalks forming a wreath, tied at the base with a ribbon bearing the legend VIET NAM, surmounted by a five-pointed star. The design is rendered in a bold, socialist-realist style characteristic of Vietnamese coinage of the period. The field is flat and unadorned beyond the central device. |

The 1976 date ties this coin directly to reunification — the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was formally proclaimed in July of that year, and the State Bank of Vietnam moved quickly to issue a unified coinage replacing the separate currency systems of North and South. These aluminum pieces circulated in an economy still devastated by decades of war, with manufacturing infrastructure largely destroyed and basic goods in severe shortage. Aluminum was the practical choice when metal supplies were constrained and face value bore little relation to purchasing power.
