Ecuador's Galápagos Islands presented a persistent monetary headache for mainland administrators. In 1916, to address chronic coin shortages on the islands, select circulating décimos were counterstamped with a "G" to restrict their legal tender status to the archipelago — preventing islanders from simply shipping hard currency back to the mainland where it commanded a premium.
KM#51.2 specifically identifies the counterstamp applied to the Heaton Mint striking of the décimo. The "G" punch placement varies enough between examples that no single die position should be considered definitive.
