Los Coyotes is a Cahuilla-Cupeño band in San Diego County, California, and one of the more remote federally recognized tribes in the continental United States. Tribal nations gained broader authority to issue their own coinage and currency instruments following legal clarifications around sovereign immunity in the late 20th century, though few have exercised it. This piece is more novelty scrip than circulating coinage — heavier and wider than a U.S. dime by a considerable margin, it was never intended for general commerce.
