Croatia's transition dinars of 1991 were a stopgap — the republic had declared independence in June but would not introduce the kuna until 1994, so this series bridged the gap while Yugoslav federal currency was still nominally in circulation. Printing locally at Zrinski in Čakovec rather than Belgrade was itself a political act, signaling fiscal separation before the legal framework fully supported it.
Zlatko Jakuš handling both design and engraving on the same note is unusual for the period and kept the entire production chain within Croatian hands.
