Jordan's independence from the British Mandate was formally recognized in May 1946, though the country had operated with increasing autonomy through the early 1940s. This 1996 issue commemorates that event under King Hussein, who by then had ruled for over four decades — longer than any other sitting head of state at the time. The .999 fine silver specification places it among Jordan's bullion-grade commemoratives rather than the lower-purity issues that dominated the earlier commemorative program.
