The uppermost line reads 'لله' (For God), followed by 'محمد رسول الله' (Muhammad is the Messenger of God), then the Abbasid caliph's honorific title 'المعتضد بالله' (Al-Mu'tadid Billah), identifying the reigning Abbasid caliph.
