The Principality of Hutt River was a self-declared micronation established in 1970 by Leonard Casley, a wheat farmer in Western Australia who seceded from the state in a dispute over wheat production quotas. Its banknotes were never legal tender in any recognized jurisdiction and functioned primarily as novelty souvenirs and correspondence props — Casley was a prolific issuer of passports, stamps, and currency as part of an elaborate sovereignty performance that lasted until 2020.

Collector interest is modest and driven almost entirely by micronation enthusiasts. Hutt River notes were printed in limited runs and distributed by mail order rather than through any banking system.
