The Bank of the People was a short-lived Upper Canadian chartered bank, and this note sits at an interesting intersection: denominated in both dollars and shillings to serve a bilingual commercial public still transitioning between British sterling reckoning and the dollar system that would eventually win out. The dual denomination was a practical necessity, not an affectation.
Durand, Burton & Edmonds operated briefly in New York during the mid-1830s before the principals reorganized under different firm names — making notes from this printer inherently dateable to a narrow window.
