The Gilbert Islands — now the core of the independent nation of Kiribati — have no constitutional authority to issue legal tender of their own, making these "1 Dollar" pieces a private fantasy issue rather than a government-sanctioned coinage. They circulate among collectors, not islanders. The Bounty connection references the 1789 mutiny, after which Fletcher Christian and eight companions eventually settled Pitcairn — geographically remote from the Gilberts but apparently close enough for a souvenir issuer's purposes.
