The 1992 date is the key to this note's existence: it was issued specifically to mark the quincentenary of Columbus's first landfall in the Americas in 1492. The Bahamas has a legitimate claim to that history — San Salvador Island is the most widely accepted candidate for the site of the October 12 landing, though the precise island has never been settled definitively among scholars.
The Canadian Bank Note Company produced this as a commemorative issue alongside the standard circulation series, which means surviving examples vary widely in handling — some were spent without a second thought, others pulled from circulation immediately.
