Aversbeschreibung This side, serving as the obverse of this fantasy piece, depicts a modified Morgan Dollar reverse design in which the standard American eagle has been replaced by a skeletal bird with outstretched wings, rendered in high relief against a plain field. The creature clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons, echoing the original Morgan Dollar iconography, while the skull-like head and exposed ribcage lend a macabre character to the composition. The legend 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' arcs along the upper periphery, flanked by reeded border denticles, while 'ONE DOLLAR' appears along the lower arc. The motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is inscribed in Gothic script across the upper field. Olive and laurel branches frame the central device on either side, closely following the layout of the original 1878–1921 Morgan Dollar reverse.

Reversbeschreibung The reverse of this fantasy hobo-style coin features an elaborately engraved infernal scene in deep relief, centered on a muscular horned devil figure seated on a throne-like structure, flanked on either side by kneeling demoness figures with animal attributes. Serpentine and tentacular forms writhe behind the central devil, whose expression is menacing and whose body is rendered with considerable anatomical detail. Skulls and additional demonic creatures populate the lower field and periphery, contributing to the overall dark fantastical composition. The legend 'E * PLURIBUS * UNUM' arcs along the upper border, and the date '1899' appears in the lower exergue. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border.

Zusätzliche Informationen

The "Devil Hobo" is a carved coin, not a mint product — a form of folk art known as a hobo nickel, though the practice extended to larger silver dollars, which offered more surface area for the carver's tool. Morgan dollars were a favored blank for this work, their high-relief fields giving amateur and professional carvers alike enough metal depth to reshape a portrait into something entirely their own. The composition listed here almost certainly reflects a later restrike or novelty reproduction; genuine 1899 Morgan dollars are 90% silver.
