| Obverse description | Central field depicts a seated mermaid figure facing forward, her fish-scaled lower body curving gracefully toward the base of the coin; she holds a staff or spear in her left hand and is adorned with a floral wreath in her flowing hair. Two large ornate decorated shields flank her on either side, and stylized coral or seaweed elements occupy the lower left field. The denomination '1 $' appears to the right in the field, while the encircling legend 'REPUBLIC OF PALAU 1993' runs along the upper periphery within a beaded border. |

Palau gained independence from U.S. administration in 1994, making this 1993 issue one of the first coins struck in anticipation of full sovereignty — produced before the Compact of Free Association had formally taken effect. The series was minted primarily for the collector market, as U.S. currency remained the practical medium of exchange on the islands and these pieces saw negligible circulation.
