Obverse description Central device depicts a heraldic shield bearing a saltire cross surmounted by a crown at its chief, rendered in relief against a stippled field. Westarctica is not a recognized state but a micronation claiming Peter I Island, a Norwegian dependency in the Bellingshausen Sea that has been visited fewer than a dozen times since its discovery in 1821. The Grand Duchy issued this piece in 2005 under Travis McHenry, a U.S. Navy petty officer who established the claim in 2001 after identifying a lapse in the Clipperton Island Rule as applied to unclaimed Antarctic territories. Norway contests this interpretation entirely.
