Greece returned to civilian rule in 1974 after seven years of military junta, and the coinage reforms that followed were part of a broader effort to re-establish democratic institutional identity. This series, running through the mid-1980s, was produced during a period of persistent inflation that steadily eroded the drachma's purchasing power — by the end of the run, a single drachma bought almost nothing in daily commerce.

Mintage responsibility fell to the Greek Mint in Athens throughout the series.
