| 裏面の説明 | Central device depicts a right hand emerging from the right, resting upon a book inscribed CONSTITUCION, symbolising fidelity to the Constitution, with a radiant rising sun emitting long rays above in the upper field. The circumferential legend IGUALDAD ANTE LA LEI arcs around the upper and lateral periphery in Latin letters, with the denomination mark 1E and assayer initials I · J positioned to the right. The fineness indicator 21 Qs. appears in the lower field flanked by decorative stars, all enclosed within a toothed inner border. The composition and design reflect the neoclassical republican iconographic tradition of early nineteenth-century South American coinage. |

Chile's escudo coinage of the 1830s was produced under considerable institutional strain — the Casa de Moneda in Santiago had only recently transitioned from colonial administration to republican control, and quality control across this period was inconsistent enough that die alignment and planchet preparation vary noticeably between individual strikes. The 1838 date falls within a window when Chilean fiscal policy was being restructured under the Portales-era conservative government, which prioritized monetary stability after decades of post-independence economic turbulence.
