Beschrijving voorzijde Enthroned frontal effigy of Saint Ermengol (Sant Ermengaud), Bishop of Urgell, depicted in full ecclesiastical vestments including mitre and cope, his right hand raised in benediction and his left hand grasping a pastoral staff; a floral spray appears to the lower right of the figure, while a bridge over water is visible in the lower left field, referencing the saint's legendary construction of the bridge at La Seu d'Urgell. The engraver's name TERUGGI appears in the right field. The circular legend surrounding the central design reads SANCTVS · ERMENGARDVS · D · M · EPS · VRGELLENSIS, with SANCTVS continuing along the lower arc, all within a beaded border.

Aanvullende informatie

Andorra had no official coinage of its own until 1976, when the Episcopal Co-Prince — the Bishop of Urgell — authorized the first modern minted series. These early escudo-denominated pieces were struck in limited quantities primarily for collectors rather than circulation, a reflection of Andorra's longstanding reliance on French francs and Spanish pesetas for everyday commerce. The escudo denomination itself was short-lived; the series was superseded within a decade by the diners coinage ahead of broader European monetary integration.
