Blank planchets escape mint facilities through a handful of documented routes: rejected in automated inspection, pulled as quality control samples, or occasionally walked out during periods of lax oversight. Euro cent planchets are among the most frequently encountered mint escapees in the error coin market, partly because the low face value of the finished coins made theft of finished strikes barely worth the risk — blanks, by contrast, draw no suspicion.
