Obverse description Within the copper-nickel centre, a stylised depiction of the central element of the Riga City Coat of Arms: a fortified gate tower flanked by two smaller turrets, each surmounted by a pennant, with crossed keys and a crown displayed above the gateway arch. The date '2004' is divided across the field, '20' to the left and '04' to the right of the tower. The legend 'LATVIJAS' arcs along the upper portion of the brass ring and 'REPUBLIKA' along the lower portion, with twelve raised stars encircling the inner disc in the style of the European Union emblem.

Additional information

Latvia struck a series of euro probe coins in 2004 as part of its accession preparation following EU entry that year, but the country would not actually adopt the euro until January 2014 — a full decade later, delayed largely by inflation criteria Latvia struggled to meet through the mid-2000s. These trial pieces were never intended for circulation; they were produced for internal testing of vending machines and automated coin-handling equipment, and distributed in limited quantities to institutions rather than the public.
