Latvia struck a series of euro probe coins in 2004 as part of its accession preparation following EU entry that year, but the country would not actually adopt the euro until January 2014 — a full decade later, delayed largely by inflation criteria Latvia struggled to meet through the mid-2000s. These trial pieces were never intended for circulation; they were produced for internal testing of vending machines and automated coin-handling equipment, and distributed in limited quantities to institutions rather than the public.
