Obverse description The copper-nickel center features the Maltese coat of arms — a heraldic shield bearing the Maltese Cross, framed by ornate baroque-style scrollwork cartouche. The brass outer ring carries twelve five-pointed stars evenly spaced around the circumference, referencing the European Union emblem. The legend MALTA appears in raised capital letters along the lower portion of the outer ring.

Malta adopted the euro on 1 January 2008 after a remarkably smooth conversion, having maintained a fixed exchange rate between the Maltese lira and the euro for the preceding year at exactly 0.4293 liri per euro. Specimen coins were struck for collector sets rather than general issue, meaning most examples in this format never approached a cash register.
