Malta adopted the euro on 1 January 2008 after a remarkably smooth conversion, having maintained a fixed exchange rate between the Maltese lira and the euro for the preceding year at exactly 0.4293 liri per euro. Specimen coins were struck for collector sets rather than general issue, meaning most examples in this format never approached a cash register.
