1 Ferding - Eric XIV Type 2, wavy shield

Reval — modern Tallinn — occupied a precarious position during the Livonian War, caught between Swedish, Polish-Lithuanian, and Russian ambitions after the collapse of the Livonian Confederation in 1561. Eric XIV's acceptance of Reval's submission that same year brought the city under Swedish protection, and municipal coinage bearing his titles followed as a direct assertion of the new political arrangement. The Type 2 designation distinguishes this issue from the earlier flat-shield variety by the characteristic wavy or undulating shield form, a subtle but cataloguably distinct die difference that Haljak documents separately.

Eric XIV was deposed by his brother John in 1568, which brackets the issue window tightly and explains the relative scarcity of Reval ferdings struck in his name.
