The Bishopric of Ösel-Wiek was among the last ecclesiastical states of the Livonian Confederation to maintain its own coinage, doing so even as the entire regional order was collapsing under the Livonian War. Magnus of Holstein — brother of the Danish king Frederick II — was appointed Bishop of Ösel-Wiek in 1560 and almost immediately began leveraging his position politically, eventually accepting Ivan the Terrible's offer to rule a puppet "Kingdom of Livonia" in 1570. These ferdings were struck during the brief window when Magnus still held genuine territorial authority.
