Korçë fell under French military administration in late 1916 after Greek forces withdrew, and the French commander Colonel Henri Descoins established a short-lived autonomous Albanian republic — the Republic of Korçë — as a buffer arrangement. These franc-denominated notes were issued by the municipality under that administration, making them effectively French-sponsored Albanian notgeld, denominated in francs rather than any Albanian unit because the occupying authority set the monetary terms.
The series is among the rarest locally-issued emergency paper from the Balkan theater of World War I. The franc denomination was abandoned when French forces withdrew in 1920.
