TAAF issues no circulating currency — the territory has no permanent civilian population, and these coins are produced exclusively for collectors. The 2024 franc continues a series that has existed largely as a philatelic and numismatic revenue stream for the French Southern and Antarctic Lands administration, whose actual governance expenditures are funded through fishing license fees in the Exclusive Economic Zone around the Kerguelen and Crozet archipelagos.
