Beschrijving voorzijde	Bare-headed right-facing bust of King Léopold II of Belgium, rendered in high relief with finely detailed beard and aged facial features in a naturalistic portrait style. The effigy occupies the central field, with the engraver's signature FERNANDUBOIS incused beneath the truncation. The surrounding legend reads LÉOP. II R.D. BELG. SOUV. DE L'ÉTAT INDÉP. Beschrijving keerzijde	Central shield bearing the arms of the Congo Free State — divided quarterly with a rampant lion and a star — surmounted by a royal crown and flanked symmetrically by two palm fronds extending diagonally across the field. The denomination 1 FRANC appears in raised letters above the shield, and the date 1896 is inscribed in the lower exergual area, all within the coin's reeded border.
