Reverse description An imperial orb surmounted by a cross, set within a Gothic quatrefoil whose four lobes are defined by a beaded inner border. The field surrounding the quatrefoil carries the titles of Emperor Karl V in Gothic (black-letter) script, with the date 1522 incorporated at the close of the legend. The composition follows the established Rhenish goldgulden type, reflecting Frankfurt's status as an imperial city entitled to strike gold coinage.
