Guam has never had its own currency — the US dollar has circulated there since the island was ceded to the United States following the Spanish-American War of 1898. This piece is a so-called "trade dollar" or local issue struck not by the US Mint but by a private concern for the Guamanian market, intended primarily as a souvenir and collectible rather than circulating coinage.
